Design Process

The architectural design process is a collaborative process. We utilize a phased design process that allows us to develop a comprehensive project undersanding, and to translate that shared vision into built form.

Pre-Design Phase

This is the information gathering phase. We aim to understand your project's motivations, aesthetic preferences, and basic requirements. Together, we'll create a comprehensive list of interior and exterior spaces, functions, relationships, and project goals. We'll also discuss the project budget, and develop a clear understanding of your priorities. Additionally, we'll conduct a thorough review of zoning codes and other relevant regulations.

Concept Design Phase

This is the dreaming phase. During this phase we explore options broadly and review multiple solutions. This phase often utilizes conceptual drawings, digital 3d models, physical study models, rough augmented reality models, conceptual options and AI rendered options. While reviewing options we listen closely for feedback to develop an understanding of lifestyle, needs, and priorities.
We review project budget and  variance utilizing a unit cost approach.

Design Development Phase

During this phase we will develop and describe all aspects of the project with floor plans, exterior elevations, details of major components, and an outline specification establishing basic materials and construction quality.  The final Design Development set of documents can be used to develop more detailed cost estimates, and can be submitted to local agencies for Planning review.
We recommend getting preliminary pricing from trade partners at this phase to confirm the design is tracking with the established budget.

Construction Documents Phase

Once the Design Development is complete and the budget has been updated, we will begin the Construction Documents phase. During this phase we will develop a set of documents describing all aspects of the building in detail.  These documents will be prepared for submission to local agencies for the purpose of construction permitting, and be used as a basis for for bidding and construction.

Construction Administration Phase

During construction DWA works with the contractor to administer the contract and monitor the construction process to ensure adherence to quality standards and design intent. We also provide custom fabrication of components, fixtures, and furnishings on some projects.
